7th Grip: Upward Diagonal Swings

Again, this is basically the same idea as yesterday.

Only today they travel along an upward diagonal angle.

7th Grip: Basic Overhand Diagonal Strikes

When I strike, I make it a point to move as shown in the video.

Otherwise I could strike myself in the abdomen with the butt end of the cane.

Otherwise it is a basic overhand series of strikes.

5th Grip: A Nine Strike Drill with Stepping

This is almost the same as yesterday’s drill.

The main difference is that I do the drill while I am shuffling.

5th Grip: A Nine Strike Drill on the Heavy Bag

The basic gist is already shown on the video.

I am standing very close to the opponent.

I strike nine times and then repeat…

The idea is to make the cane as comfortable in my hands as possible.

5th Grip: Block and Counter against a Front Kick

I am standing in a Forward Bow.

The Cane is held across my body in the 5th Grip at about abdomen height.

I shift back to a Cat as I snap the end of the can down and across (as shown).

Then I advance quickly and drive out a counter strike (a cross check in this instance).

The Cane in the 5th Grip: A Basic Block and Counter Drill

This is similar to the empty hands drill.

I block (this time guarding my face).

I pause slightly.

I counter with the other end to the body.

Six Basic Cane Strikes from the 5th Grip

There are many ways to strike with the cane (even using only one grip)

The six basic strikes I am demonstrating today are utilized at punching distance.

The video show them better than I can explain.

The doing of these on a regular basis is what makes them work and keeps them vital.

Shift Forward Side Snap Kick

The actual kick is done with the rear leg from a Forward Bow Stance

The video shows the actual ‘how to’ so I will let it do that.

The kick looks like nothing until it makes contact.

Slide in Side Snap Kick

This is done from a Leading Horse Stance.

In many ways it is similar to a Front Snap Kick.

The knee comes up before the foot.

The lower leg whips out and back.

The main difference is the kick is done with the outside edge of the heel.

With practice this can be a very powerful move but it does not look like it.

Shift Away Side Heel Thrust

I start in a Leading Horse just like I did a couple of days ago.

But this time I start closer to my opponent.

I put all my weight on my back leg and tilt my hips toward the target.

Then I kick.

Looks like nothing really…

The effect of this kick is apparent on the bag.

Shift Forward Side Heel Thrust Kick

This is done from a Forward Bow with the rear leg.

It should be preceded with a block or strike that momentarily stuns the attacker.

While it is a powerful kick; it also takes a long time to get there.

Slide in Side Heel Thrust Kick

This has both good and bad qualities to it.

It is powerful, short and simple.

It is easy to execute.

It is also slow, easy to see coming and requires an effort to recover from.

But if it land it can cause a lot of damage.

Therefore, it has to be practiced a lot and that practice also must include:

Beginning a defense or attack like a block or a lead backfist.

This will momentarily stop an attacker ‘setting him up’ for the side heel thrust.

The Inside to Side Block Drill

Again, I perform this drill with each arm in turn.

Again I make contact with a twisting wrist against an incoming attack.

This time I am guarding the side of my head.

The Downward Foot Block Drill

The video shows it better than I can explain it.

The main idea is to strike the side of an incoming strike (or kicks) to the lower torso.

I strike the side by swinging my arm widely.

I acquire power from a number of sources.

My strongly held body, firm core and bent knees add power to my swining arm.

The turn of the elbow one way and the forearm the other way also give my blow power.

This is a tricky block to use properly and should be learned from a knowledgeable instructor.

It requires a lot of practice to learn a a lot of practice to keep it a useable weapon.

The Crossdownward Arm Block Drill

This alternate arm blocking drill covers the solar plexus from a straight punch.

The block is light, quick and powerful.

I keep my torso still and my core firm and all times.

Slide in Side Snap Kick

Again, I am in a Leading Horse Stance

I step forward and cock my kicking leg as shown.

I extend the leg.

Done correctly this kick is simple and looks like nothing.

It is only when a target is struck that the power of this moves becomes apparent.

Slide in Front Snap Kick

This time I am using the ball of the foot to hit with.

Therefore, I make sure my kicking foot is pulled up high.

This ensures that I am able to make contact correctly.

I also cock the leg and snap the kick out and back.

Done correctly this is a very fast move.

It looks like nothing.

When it lands…That is a different story.
