Backhand Underhand Knifehand Hammer

This is a strike to the groin.

In order for it to reach, I must squat down as I strike.

Bending forward is inadvisable.

Overhand Forehand Knifehand Hammer

Again, the video show best how to execute thus.

I can strike forward or down with it.

The strike must be done as a follow up.

If I lead with this, it is easy to see coming and can be defended against.

Backhand Knifehand Thrust

The video show how to do it better than an explanation can.

I am at punching distance when I execute this strike.

It is a deceptively powerful movement and care should be taken in its application.

Forehand Knifehand Swing

Just like it sounds.

Forming the Knifehand so it is both firm and aligned takes regular and constant practice.

That is just holding the hand in a Knifehand (not even using it).

Once I could hold it, I had to learn to use it.

Today I am using it like a forehand in tennis.

There are obvious differences between the two but the idea is sound.

I make contact with the edge of the palm and drive through the target.

Shift Forward Side Snap Kick

I start at full kicking distance.

I am in a Forward Bow Stance.

I shift forward and turn my support leg as I bring my kicking leg up.

I use the turn to add power and distance to my side kick.

There is the added bonus that I can kick with my rear leg too.

Shift Away Side Kick

Again I am able to touch the bag with both my feet together and my arm fully extended.

The main difference is that I start close to the bag.

I shift my weight to my back leg as I raise my lead leg.

I do this to put myself at the correct distance to execute my side snap kick.

Half Step Slide in Side Snap Kick

Pretty much the same as yesterday except that I start much closer.

Therefore my shuffle is only half as far.

The idea is that I want to be able to kick with this kick whether I am at full kicking distance or closer…

Slide in Side Snap Kick

A simple easy review today.

I start in a Leading Horse Stance.

A step forward and raise my hip up while cocking the leg (as shown).

I snap the side edge of my heel into the target.

A withdraw and repeat as necessary.

Alternate Arm Drill using The Downward Sweeping Foot Block

This is a swinging motion.

When I execute it, the motion feels slow (compared to other blocks).

As with the other blocks I have shown this week; I keep my torso still and my core frim.

I also keep my shoulders still.

As I said at the beginning of this post; The motion of this block is basically that of a ‘Swinging Backfist’ done to the side of the incoming limb (with my forearm).

Alternate Arm Drill using a Crossdownward Arm Block

Today I am guarding my torso with a Crossdownward Arm Block.

I keep my torso still as I snap the block out.

The speed of the arm and the twist of the wrist combine with a stable stance to power this move.

The Alternate Arm Outside Forearm Blocking Drill

Just easier to show than to explain.

The important point are to keep my torso still and core firm.

I do not put my shoulder into it, instead I keep still.

I snap the arm across my body and torque the wrist as I make contact.

The Alternate Arm Inside Hooking Block Drill

Just like it sounds.

This blocking drill works the ‘Inside Hooking Block’ with both arms alternately.

I cover my upper torso with this.

Again, my core is firm, my torso is still.

My knees are bent and my weight is on the balls of my feet.

The snapping turn of the wrist as I make contact adds power to this movement.

This is a light quick feeling strike.

An Alternate Arm Rising Block Drill

The block itself is light quick and efficient against a thrust to the head.

The snap of the wrist at the end of the block adds power to an already powerful move.

My torso is still, my core is firm and my knees slightly bent with my weight on the balls of my feet.

Shift Forward Kicks to Bag

I use the same four Basic Kicks today.

But I use the back leg by shifting forward.

I show the Front Thrust, the Offset, the Roundhouse and the Side Snap Kicks.

Again, I hold back when I kick because I would knock the bag all over the place.

This is about kicking to the point of contact.

For the first three kicks this ‘point of contact’ is made with the ball of the foot.

For the last kick I make contact with the side edge of the heel.

Slide in Kicks to Bag

There are four Basic Slide in Kicks demonstrated here today.

I show the Front Thrust, the Offset, the Roundhouse and the Side Snap Kicks.

I also hold back when I kick because I would knock the bag all over the place.

This is about kicking to the point of contact.

Basic Block and Counter

This is a review of a ‘Block with one hand-Pause-Counter with the other hand’.

The pause is deliberately left in so that another block can be inserted if necessary.

Shift Forward Offset Kick

Similar to yesterday’s drill in that I am kicking with the back leg.

It is different than yesterday in that I am kicking at an angle.

I also keep my foot is pulled up throughout the kick.

This is a very fast kick.

I am making contact with the ball of the foot.

Therefore I make contact with the bag at an angle (as shown).

Shift Forward Front Thrust Kick

Done from a Forward Bow stance

I turn my support foot forty five degrees.

I lift my kicking leg and pull the foot up tight (as though I am standing on my heel)

I snap my hip forward and drive the leg out.

I extend the foot as though standing on the ball of the foot.

It is actually the ball of the foot that makes contact.

After the kick I recoil the leg and set down.

Slide in Roundhouse Kick

Like the Offset Kick I did yesterday, this is a snap kick.

And I also make contact with the top of the foot (in this instance).

My main differences are that I step in a Leading Horse Stance…

And that I have my kicking leg closer to parallel than the offset is.

Slide in Offset Kick

From a Forward Bow, I step forward raise my lead leg up at an angle and kick.

Done in the air it looks like nothing.

Done on the bag it looks like something else.

It is not as powerful as the Front Thrust kick but it is very fast.
