The Cane in the 5th Grip: A Fifth Drill

The attacker steps forward and grabs the defender’s lapel with his lead arm.

He then strikes to the face with his free arm.

The defender knocks the grab aside with the middle of his cane (a shown).

Then he uses the end portion of his Cane to knock the punch aside.

In a continuing motion, he drives the hook into the side of the attacker’s head

This is followed up by another strike with the opposite side of the  Cane.

The defender then shoves the attacker away with the end.

If there is room he would retreat.

The Cane in the 5th Grip: A Fourth Drill

Because of the distance involved in kicking, the drill is slightly different.

I have to withdraw in order to get his leg to fully straighten out (before I hit it).

Then I have to step forward and forward again in order to be close enough to strike him.

This is important in that it stops him from resetting to re-attack me again.

I finish with a cross check and withdraw back out.

The Cane in the 5th Grip: A Third Drill

The ‘How-To’ is easier to watch than explain.

What is important is to keep my ‘Short Staff’ down until the attacker has committed to his punch.

He ends up so close that if I react too soon; my defense will not work.

5th Grip on the Cane: A Second Drill

Against an Overhand Punch to the face: I block straight up.

I counter by driving the end down into the neck.

I follow this by driving the back of the hook up on an angle into the body.

I cross check my attacker back before stepping back.

Simultaneous Mantis or Crossdownward Block with Counterpunch while Shuffling

Similar to the drill I did yesterday.

I even start from the same position.

Again: The starting point (E. Parker’s ‘Point of Origin’) for both blocks is the same.

I use the Mantis Block to cover one side of my body.

I use the Crossdownward block to cover the center of my body.

I do this both moving forward or after I have stepped back.

My lead arm executes the Block while my rear arm Counterpunches.

It is only when I make contact with the bag that the power of the punches is displayed.

Simultaneous Outside Block with Counterpunch while Shuffling

This is very similar to yesterday’s drill.

The point is to combine stepping with punching while blocking,

Single Grip on the Cane: A Sixth Combined Punching and Striking Drill

I am executing a punch with my free hand then a Backhand Thrust with the Hook End of the Cane.

The Cane thrust is high and the punch is low (for this drill).

This drill is very similar in nature to one I did on January 13 with another part of the Cane.

Single Grip on the Cane: A Fifth Combined Punching and Striking Drill

The distance is the same as yesterday's drill.

However, I am striking with the top of the Cane Hook in a Forehand Swing.

I can go with an Overhand Forehand or I can go Horizontal Forehand.

I am combining this with a punch with my free hand.

Single Grip on the Cane: A Second Combined Punching and Striking Drill

(Today I am actually using a Cane.)

I am executing a punch with my free hand then an Overhand Forehand strike with the middle of the Cane.

This is a bit harder than yesterday’s drill.

There is a real chance of striking myself (as shown, so care must be taken.)

Single Grip on the Cane: A Combined Punching and Striking Drill

(Technically I am using a walking stick.)

I am executing a punch with my free hand then a Forehand strike with the middle of the Cane.

At first glance it seems a simple enough drill.

However…

It takes no small amount of practice to make this work on the heavy bag.

(That does not include working it with a partner either.)

And it takes regular practice to keep this skill up.

The Cane in an Augmented 2nd Grip: Block then Two Counters

I hold the Cane as shown in the Augmented 2nd Grip.

It is low and parallel across my thighs.

I block the incoming punch by knocking the inside of the punching arm.

I counter twice: once to the body and once to the head.

Then I reset and repeat.

As I state, a strong grip on this is vital or I risk injuring myself.

The 10th Grip on the Cane: Free Arm Blocks then Counter Punch with the Cane

I use my free arm to block a punch to the face or torso first.

After a slight pause I counter thrust…

Gripping the Cane end; I use it to thrust (as shown).

I have to be at punching distance for this to work.

The 7th Grip on the Cane: Blocks with Simultaneous Counters

Gripping the Cane in the middle; I use it to block (as shown).

I simultaneously counter with free hand.

I have to be at punching distance for this to work.

It should be noted:

At this distance the cane can be grabbed.

Were this to happen, I would be close enough to strike.

In my opinion, a wrestling match of this nature is best started out with a strike.

Specific Cane Retention Techniques will be covered on another video.

Combining Block, Counter with Cane Hook Thrusts

I use my free hand to block a punch to my face (or body).

I immediately strike with the same arm.

Only then do I use the back of the hook to strike (as shown).

In the air it looks like nothing.

Against the bag, the power is apparent.

A Drill with the Cane in an Augmented 1st Grip

The video shows this drill better than I can explain it.

The idea is to practice it in close.

I start slow and gradually build speed and power.

Only when I strike something do I see how powerful this is.
