Floating Block then Snapping Backfist followed by a Spinning Backfist

Today I turn yesterday’s combination into a defensive drill against a roundhouse kick to the solar plexus.

I execute a floating block against the kick and as he steps back, I follow…

Like yesterday, after the block, I ‘crossover’ as I snap out the backfist.

I literally step slightly behind my lead leg with my rear leg as I strike.

If all has gone well, I am now in a good position to spin my ‘Swinging Backfist’.

After I have landed I make it a point to recover back out.

Snapping Backfist followed by a Spinning Backfist

In order to land a big move like a ‘Spinning Backfist’; I have to set it up with a quick move first.

Therefore I ‘crossover’ as I snap out the backfist.

I literally step slightly behind my lead leg with my rear leg as I strike.

If all has gone well, I am now in a good position to spin my ‘Swinging Backfist’.

After I have landed I make it a point to recover back out.

Leading Underhand Snapping Hammerfist

Just like yesterday, this is done in a Leading Horse.

However, this strike utilizes the bottom of the ‘Hammerfist’ in an backhanded underhand snapping motion.

This is a very deceptive blow that can land straight into the body and punching range.

Leading Horizontal Backfist

This is done in a Leading Horse and utilizes the back edge of the knuckles.

When done in the air, it both looks and feels like nothing.

Done against a heavy bag, it is a very powerful blow.

The Horizontal Forehand Ridgehand Swing

I actually execute this somewhat differently than how I learned it (originally).

I start with my arm at a ninety degree angle to my attacker.

I bend my arm into the strike.

I make contact with the inside of the wrist.

I recover to a ‘High Guard’ position

These changes are neither good nor bad; they are simply my way of using this very powerful technique.

The Backhand Knifehand Thrust

Yesterday I performed the Forehand Knifehand Swing.

Today I am executing the Backhand Knifehand Thrust.

The video shows how to do this better than the written word.

However, there are a few important points worth reiterating.

I hold my Knifehand as shown in a firm manner and strike with the edge of the palm.

I make it a point to pull back my opposite hand as I strike.

I turn my hips forward as I execute my backhand thrusting motion.

Some would call this a ‘reverse rotation’.

I posture is erect and my core is firm and my stomach clenched.

I am relaxed as I strike yet I I tighten up as I make contact.

As I said, the writing is much more complicated than the doing (or even watching).

Horizontal Forehand Knifehand

This technique utilizes a torque in its application as well.

The video shows how to execute it.

The main things I can add here are these:

I keep my core held firm and my posture erects(no slouching).

I keep my knees bent and my feet apart.

This is a haymaker so it should be ‘set up’.

That is to say, I preface this move with a jab or snapping block.

I only use this when I have a clear target and the time to put this where it will do some damage.

Otherwise, I will be blocked.

The Crossdownward Arm Block

This block also employs the wrist.

This time it is with a downward twisting driving strike against an incoming punch to the solar plexus (that soft spot just under where the ribs meet).

That wrist twist is used on a wide array of blocks and strikes.

It adds tremendous power to whatever movement I am making.

The Downward Foot Block

This is a very basic block that is actually a swing and not a snap.

It is used to guard the lower torso and redirects an incoming thrust of foot or fist.

The Outside Forearm Block Drill

Very similar to yesterday’s drill except that I block across my body ion the other direction.

It is the snap of the wrist (a sharp turn) and a solid bas (good balance) that gives this block its power to stop a Forefist thrust to the chest.

The Inside Hooking Block Drill

The full actual name is actually a description.

This is a block that starts on the ‘inside’ of the stance.

It finishes on the ‘outside’.

Hence the name in this system is the ‘inside’ block.

This guards the arm and shoulder with limited chest protection.

Again, no torque is required in this system to make it work but…

It must be set up so that the attacker is drawn to attack this target specifically.

Easy enough to say but this is quite challenging to actually do against a hostile adversary.

A lot of practice is required…

The Rising Block Exercise

This is the classic version of this maneuver.

Just the four moves as shown.

I use this block to guard my head against a straight punch.

But I also use only one of the four moves to do this.

Regarding the drill:

I do not turn my hips into the block.

I keep my torso absolutely still with my core held firm.

I do snap my wrist as it reaches the end of the block.

Slide in Front Snap Kick then Follow-Up Jab

A simple enough drill today.

I start in a Forward Bow.

I step forward and raise my led knee up.

I snap out a Front Kick with the top of the foot.

As I come down, I drive out my lead fist to the head.

Only at this point do I withdraw.

Done in the air, this looks like nothing.

Done to the heavy bag; it is a different story.

Jason’s Forehand Ridgehand to the Heavy Bag

Today is the sixth day of six where Jason shows the power of several Kicks and strikes.

Jason’s Forehand Ridgehand to the Heavy Bag

Today Jason is driving a Forehand Ridgehand into the heavy bag.

Like the power kick yesterday, this kick should be set up first with a quick move like a jab or block first.

And again: Once that is done, the finishing power of this movement is apparent.

Jason’s Jab to the Heavy Bag

Today is the fourth day of six where Jason shows the power of severak Kicks and strikes.

Jason’s Jab to the Heavy Bag

Even when the punch is done while the body is motionless, the punch has real power.

The idea is to punch with correct form through the target.

The ‘Ready’ Drill with Jason’s Lead Jab to the Hand Pad

Today is the third day of six where Jason shows the power of severak Kicks and strikes.

The ‘Ready’ Drill with Jason’s Lead Jab to the Hand Pad

This time both Jason and I participate in this ‘Ready’ drill.

The point is to be able to jab to target (a small hand pad) inside punching distance when both are ‘ready’.

If I telegraph my movement, he will see (the same is true in reverse).

If the punch is done while the body is motionless, the punch will land.

Jason’s Slide in Kicks to the Heavy Bag

Today I am fortunate enough to have Jason here to show the power of the slide in kicks of Yellow Belt.

Done in the air, these kicks look like nothing powerful is happening.

But as Jason kicks the heavy bag, the power of each of these kicks is apparent!

Sideways with 5th Grip on the Cane: Multiple Blocks then Counter

This time I face my opponent in a Leading Horse with the Cane in the 5th Grip held low.

The end of the cane is toward the opponent.

My opponent steps in and grabs my lapel or shirt collar.

He follows this with high hard punch to my head with his other hand.

Or perhaps he uses a punch to my kidney.

I block and counter as shown.

It is unlikely he will be able to move back before I can counter thrust with the end of the cane.

Therefore when I am done, I move away while keeping my guard up.

5th Grip on the Cane: Multiple Blocks then Counter (Still a Different Version)

Again, I face my opponent in a Forward Bow with the Cane in the 5th Grip held low.

My opponent steps in and throws a low hard punch to the open side of my torso.

He follows this with high hard punch to my head with his other hand.

I block and counter as before.

Today I also demonstrate that my blocks with the cane are as fast as the punches.

They must be as fast and as effortless as the punches or they will not get the job done.

5th Grip on the Cane: Multiple Blocks then Counter (Another version)

Again, I face my opponent in a Forward Bow with the Cane in the 5th Grip held low.

My opponent steps in and throws a high hard punch to the closed side of my head.

He follows this with low hard punch with his other hand.

I block to the inside of my opponents first wrist.

Then I drive the cane down as I block the top of his other wrist.

If he stays there my counter strike will land.

But if he pulls in preparation to attack again, I step in and snap a quick kick to his groin.

5th Grip on the Cane: Multiple Blocks then Counter

Again, I face my opponent in a Forward Bow with the Cane in the 5th Grip held low.

My opponent steps in and throws a high hard punch to the closed side of my head.

He follows this with another high hard punch with his other hand.

Basically, he throws two haymakers in a row.

I block to the inside of my opponents wrist.

Then I drive the cane across my face and block the inside of his other wrist.

If he stays there my counter cross check will land.

But if he pulls in preparation to attack again, I step in and snap a quick kick to his groin.
