The Cane in the 5th Grip: High Block to Closed then Multiple Counters

In this drill, I face my opponent in a Forward Bow with the Cane in  the 5th Grip held low.

My opponent steps in and throws a high hard punch to the closed side of my head.

That is to say, if I am standing in a left Bow then the punch is coming to the left side of my head.

I block to the inside of my opponents wrist.

If he stays there my counter trust with the cane end will land.

But if he pulls in preparation to attack again: I follow up.

I step in and snap a quick kick to his groin.

Simultaneous Block with Forehand Knifehand Hammer

The same six blocks I used yesterday and the day before are here again.

I use them to guard the head and upper torso.

It is the Forehand Knifehand Hammer that I use as the counter which is different.

In many ways it is like a western boxer’s hook.

Both are slow yet powerful.

Both must be set up in order to land.

Both can be finishers.

Simultaneous Block with Counter Backhand Hammerfist

This drill is all about the original position of the arms.

One arm is vertical and one arm is horizontal.

I block and counter as shown and then…

For the drill I return to the point of origin.

Only on the last do I show how I can modify the drill to a different format.

Simultaneous Block with Counter Punch

The blocks are the same but this must be set up to work properly.

If I am unpredictable I am harder to hit.

Therefore I sometimes block and sometimes move and then sometimes I do something else entirely.

My counters work the same way.

Sometimes it is a big counter and sometimes it is a quick one.

Then…Like today…There are times when I counter hard as I block…

Block/ Check/ Counter

This defense works only against a heavy powerful punch.

I make a strong but quick block to redirect the punch.

Then I use my other hand to ‘check’ the punch (hold temporarily in place).

Only as I am checking this heavy blow do I counter with my first arm.

Block counter with the same arm

This time the blocks are the same but the counter is done with the same arm I blocked with.

This is a continuous movement as I am so close to my attacker.

There is no pause between these two movements.

Block and Counterpunch

A basic drill today.

I Block with one hand…Pause…Then Counterpunch with the other hand.

The pause is deliberate.

I can use this format with any number of different blocks and counters.

However, today I use the six basic blocks that cover my head and torso.

I am also using only a single simple Forefist counterpunch.

Block and Counter with the Cane in the 2nd Grip

Again the attacker is coming from my bare had side with a punch to the face.

I use my bare arm to block.

As I counter with the same arm I step forward into my attacker.

When I execute this drill I usually only do one Barehand counter but it can be done with two.

I slap the end of the cane into my bare hand and drive it into my attacker thre times.

Only then do I withdraw out.

The Cane in the 2nd Grip Drill against a Punch from the Empty Hand Side

This is almost the same as yesterday’s drill.

Only this time the attack is coming from the empty hand side.

This means I have to block differently and my counter is with the end of the cane (and not the hook).

The Cane 2nd Grip: Block and Counter Thrust to Side

This is a basic drill against a punch to my face from an attacker whom is on cane side.

The attacker steps in and punches to my face on the side of my body I am holding the cane on.

I block with the cane (as shown).

I grab the cane at the other end.

I step into my attacker and thrust to his face, then his body and then to his chest.

Only at this time do I withdraw.

Combining The Cane in an Augmented 1st grip with Bare Hand Skills

I start by standing sideways to my opponent with the bare hand closest to him.

He swings a punch for the back side of my head.

I turn slightly and block the inside of his wrist.

I step into him as I strike with the edge of my hand in a backhand form to his head.

Then I rechamber my hand and strike to his body.

At this point I slap the can up (as shown) into an ‘Augmented 1st Grip’.

Then I thrust with the end to the head, the body and then the chest.

At this point I withdraw.

Notice that I do not go fast nor do I swing wildly about.

This is a short, sharp, precise drill.

Block and Counter using the Cane in the 2nd Grip combined with Barehand Skills

*PLEASE NOTE*

Frequent use against a heavy bag will weaken a short staff (as known as a cane).

Today, I broke mine…Again.

Today's Video

I use the cane in the 2nd grip to block as I punch with my bare fist.

I use either a ‘Rising Block’ or an ‘Inside Block’ as both leave me free to simultaneously counter.

Only then do I use the same part of the cane to execute a follow-up strike with.

The Cane in the 9th and 10th grip combined with Bare Hands

As I show, these grips can be used primarily for thrusting.

I can block side to side or upward but the main use of this short staff at punching range is ‘Thrusting’.

Measurements for the Cane and for Bare Hand Skills

Knowing the correct distance to strike with both bare hands and the cane is an acquired skill.

It also needs a lot of practice just to be maintained

Cane in 2nd Grip Block and Multiple Counters

I block a punch to my stomach mush as I did last week.

The counters are different.

I chamber the cane horizontally across my body and thrust with the part closest to my hand.

I then punch with my free hand before thrusting with the same part of the cane again.

Only at this point do I withdraw.

Combining Cane techniques in the 2nd grip with Bare Hand Skills

I start with the Cane in the 2nd grip with my lead arm in a Diagonal Horse Stance.

I Block across my body (low).

I turn into a rear arm punch (high)to the face.

I drive the butt end of the Cane as a secondary follow-up counter.

I reset.

Combining Cane Techniques in the 5th Grip with a Front Knee

Holding the cane in the 5th grip, I block a punch to the face by lifting one end to a vertical position (as shown).

I re chamber the cane and use the same end to strike my opponent.

Only at this point do I lift my knee up into my attacker’s groin.

I make use of short ‘adjuster’ steps to increase or decrease the range as necessary.

Block and Counter Combined with The Cane in the Ninth Grip

This is simple Block, Pause and Counter Twice (once with the cane and once with the fist).

Combining a Slide in Front Kick with Cane Techniques

I slide in and execute a Front Kick while using the cane for support..

I step down and return back to kicking distance.

I grab the cane in the middle while maintaining my grip on the hook (as shown).

At this point I thrust the end into the bag.

I let go of the hook while holding the cane in the middle.

Then I whip the cane into the side of the bag.

I make it a point to use the side of the hook to whip into the bag.

This makes for an easier strike with less chance of damage to my wrist.

I do this on both sides.

The description of this actually takes much more time and effort to do than the drill itself.

Simultaneous Rising Block with Counter Forehand Hammerfist

Once again I am working with Jason.

And again, this drill is very similar to yesterdays.

The main difference is the use a Forehand Hammerfist to counter attack with.

Again the attacker leads with an overhand punch to the forehead.

The defender defends with a ‘Rising Block’.

This time the defender also counter attacks with a ‘Forehand Hammerfist’ with his other hand as he blocks.

It works best against a strong single punch (as opposed to a flurry of them).
